There is a lot to be said about getting a good breakfast. An essential part of a balanced breakfast is trying to get enough protein packed into it! I struggle, I do. Breakfast is my biggest challenge and I am trying to do better. Making sure protein is a part of a balanced meal is so important for my energy level, my digestion and my ability to start a day off on the right foot. That is why I love pairing a cold glass of milk with my Sausage and Cheese Omelette! I am learning through research and talking to friends who have more knowledge on nutrition than I do that adding that glass of milk to my breakfast can help up the protein that I need anyway!
Look, we all do it. We get up, we grab something easy, if at all, and head out to our busy days of work, exercise, child care and life. With breakfast being so important to all of us, though, we really should schedule it in to our daily routine. My sausage and cheese omelette takes less than 5 minutes to put together so you would think I could get up 5 minutes earlier to enjoy it a few times a week! By adding a glass of milk to my breakfast that I should make time to enjoy, I can start my day off full of the good stuff instead of cramming down the frozen stuff!
I have to say, especially as I age, I am keenly aware of the lack of energy I seem to have during the days I don’t eat enough protein, or any at all, in the morning. I have forced myself through a grueling CrossFit routine with no nutrition at all. Those days are terrible as I feel like I am lagging all day long, even after I eat. Powering up my mornings with a protein-rich breakfast including milk can help energize me every morning. I feel fuller longer and can focus on the things I want to accomplish when I get the recommended 25-30 grams of protein before noon. Starting out well makes my whole day easier to handle!

A glass of milk is great on it’s own as I get dressed or pack the kid’s lunches. But pairing it with a meal high in protein can really get my body going in the morning. That is why I love my Sausage and Cheese Omelette! It is super simple to make and pairs well with the creamy coolness of milk!
- 3 eggs
- 1 tbsp milk
- ¼ cup cheese
- ¼ cup diced sausage
- dab of guacamole
- Italian seasoning
- In a skillet, slightly brown the dices sausage. While that is cooking, beat the eggs and milk together. Remove the sausage and pour the egg mixture into the same pan. Allow to cook without touching a few minutes. I cover the eggs while they cook to have them cook more completely through. Remove lid and gently run a spatula around the edges to make sure the omelette is not sticking. Add the cheese in the middle. Add the sausage. Gently fold over the sides to make it seal. Flip once and then remove to a plate. Season with Italian Seasoning and a dab of guacamole
Enjoying the warm omelette with a cool glass of skim milk really does fill me up and amp me up for my morning! It is amazing the difference in my attitude and energy when I get the recommended 25- 30 grams of protein, including an 8 ounce glass of milk, by noon!
Even on the days I get up and grab two hard boiled eggs, I can easily up my protein with a glass of milk to go with it. Pair milk with oatmeal, a multi grained bagel or any other food you love to get the recommended amount we all need!
