Who remembers the classic children’s book, Maxi the Taxi Dog that was published 25 years ago? I was a little old then to be reading children’s books and I didn’t have kids yet but even I remember it being on the book shelves of my friend’s kids. With many other books to read following this beloved dog, it makes sense that parents would want to introduce their children to the story now. I’ll be honest. I thought my kids would be too young for this app. But I handed the phone to Megan, my year old, and told her the background of Maxi the Taxi Dog. A stray in New York rescued by Jim, he soaked up the sights and sounds of the city as a beloved pet that was rescued. Since we have three rescue dogs and three more than we are fostering until they can find their home, Megan was immediately intrigued.

The app is simple to use and she had it figured out in no time. She discovered that the app could read to you – giving you a break, parents – and that the augmented reality was, ‘Oh my gosh, so cool Mom!’

She even grabbed our foster puppy, Petey, in an attempt to show him that he will find a loving home one day and that he, too, might aspire to be an awesome and helpful Taxi Dog!

Here is something cool. The app was created by an Academy Award winner in special effects—making for a super special storytelling experience! I can tell you that it is very well done. The picture is super clear, the voice easy to hear and the movement of the characters and the story line enchanting.
