As we moms shop at the store, trying to handle the grocery list, the kids and the extreme talent of saying ‘no’ 7000 times, we also have in the back of our minds our budget. If you are like me, you keep a running tally of the cost of things and a mental note of the dent it can make in your checking account. Years ago, I did the coupon thing. I stayed up late, searched the paper, the internet, mailers and more for coupons. And then I would get to the store super early in the morning and try to save as much as possible. I STILL have things two years later that I bought back then!

Things have changed with my status as a single mom so now, I just buy way less than I used to. I no longer have time for the endless coupon cutting. Plus, trying to get my kids up at 6am to hit the sales is just not going to happen. So, my coupon days are behind me except for one tried and true trick that always saves me money. I turned up the AC so I knew it would not come on for 4 days. Luckily, the temps were mild enough in the home that my dogs would be OK. I walked around once more to make sure all of the lights were turned off after I had everyone loaded into the car service so I could catch any the kids might have left on. And I negotiated multiple trips with the car service to get a discount!

As for the extreme cost of travel, I packed snacks in each girls backpack and carried a backpack of my own to reduce the luggage I had to check! By only taking enough clothes for the 4 day trip, I reduced to one backpack and saved $70 in baggage fees!
