One of my favorite things in the world is good old fashioned tacos. Or quesadillas. Or Enchiladas. Or any other Mexican food, actually (see my Lasagna Pie Recipe!). But since I am trying to eat healthier I am also trying to get processed foods out of my house. That means, that along with the flour tortillas, the high sodium taco seasoning that I used to buy by the truckload needs to go as well. So I thought I would share how to make taco seasoning in your home.
- 1 tbsp Chili Powder
- 1½ tsp Cumin
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Black Pepper
- ½ tsp Paprika
- ½ tsp Corn Starch
- ¼ tsp Garlic Powder
- ¼ tsp Onion Powder
- ¼ tsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
- ¼ tsp Oregano
- ¼ tsp Brown Sugar (optional)
- ¼ tsp Cayenne (optional for more heat)
- Brown your meat, drain. Add the seasoning plus ½ cup water for 1-2 lb of ground meat.
Creating great recipes starts with great seasonings. But putting something in your foods that you might not know the process of making is just unnecessary. So making condiments at home can be a great substitute for buying it at the store.
You can make a large batch of this and store it in airtight jars just like your regular spices. In fact, you can make this and add it to a great gift basket for friends! It is so easy and so versatile that you will find all kinds of recipes to add a little taco flair too!
Think of grilling your chicken with some and tossing it into a salad. Consider seasoning it and making a spicier chicken salad for your crackers. You can even add it to the center filling for deviled eggs! There are so many options.
Having this homemade seasoning ready to go that you made at home is just fun and gives you the security of knowing what is in it every time you use it!
What are some spices you make at home ? I would love to see them!
Try adding 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder to this. It’s like magic.
