I read an article that other day that said that the average age a child gets a phone is 6. While my three kids at ages 8, 7 and 5 are right in that range, I am just not ready for them to have a phone all the time. However, with them going to their dad’s every other weekend to visit, the idea of knowing that I can call them is a bonus. Thing is, they are notorious for losing phones I have given them in the past. So while at Walmart this week, I not only bought them a new phone, the Samsung Galaxy Avant and signed up for more another lowest priced unlimited plans, but I headed to the craft area to get something that would encourage them to take better care of their phones.
For a while now I have been a Walmart Family Plan user. Aside from great phones that I am OK with my kids having for their visits, the monthly payment of $29.88 make it affordable too. I have not had any dropped calls when I call them and can hear them clearly. All important things for a mom worried about her kids! But the other added benefit which never really occurred to me is the added benefit of the memories my kids would capture looking through the camera of the phone. I download it when they get home and love to see the silliness they create!
One challenge I do have with giving young children a phone is them taking care of it. As I mentioned, they have lost previous phones and I still have no idea what they did with them. So the days of sending the phones with no way to keep them safe are over! They need something that they think is pretty cool. Something glittery that they can call their own! I have discovered that the kids take better care of their stuff if they feel it is ‘special’. So, in an attempt to make this new phone last a while, because it is super cool, the kids and I made Hand Print Bags for them!
The bags do three things. They give the girls a personalized bag that each can call their own. I still have a few other phones I got the kids from Walmart Family Mobile so each will have their own! Secondly, it gives me time with my kids that I won’t ever get back. Times that make the memories that make the childhood. Thirdly, the hand prints that are on the bags stop time and let me look back and remember how little they really were!
What you will need:
Three small bags
Puffy paint
Glitter
Children’s hands
Foam paint brush
Walmart Family Mobile Postpaid plan (you are not billed at the END of each month)
Walmart Family Mobile Samsung Galaxy Avent Super Cool phone
Walmart Family Mobile Starter kit if you are brand new to it!
Using the foam brush, paint the child’s hand completely. Make sure you get the tiny parts for the most coverage. Place a piece of paper in between the bag so that the paint does not bleed through. Help your child make the hand print on the bag. Press each little finger down and the palm too!
Let it dry completely and then flip the bag to the other side. In puffy paint, or glitter glue, write out a message! Mine is ‘Hand’s Off Katie’s Phone’, but personalized to each child. If you use paint, use glitter to make the message sparkle. Let dry completely! Add the phone with the SIM card from the starter kit, the charger and plug and watch as your kids find a whole new value to the phone you just bought them!
Then watch as they carefully carry the phone in the bag that is made just for them. When they get home from wherever they are, check out the photos! You would be amazing of the memories they capture without your being there! It’s truly awesome!
