I have talked about it before and I will continue to do so until this topic is no longer taboo. I suffer from it, though minor, and I have friends who have more severe cases. I also have a friend who suffers from UC, or Ulcerative colitis. Both conditions can be annoying, painful and interrupt day to day life in an instant. When my system is out of kilter and I am dealing with IBS, whether it be from stress or diet or travel, it is hard to focus on what I need to do. I hate having to be near a restroom when I have an attack. Especially when I am traveling or trying to have a fun day with the kids. In addition, it is so bothersome to have to find a bathroom in an instant when on the road. There is nothing more embarrassing that having an episode in a public restroom. Add to that the uncomfortable cramping and pain associated with it. That is why I agreed to be a part of the VSL#3: The Journey Back” campaign. During it, I will be taking the medical food probiotic, VSL #3, and reporting back on how it works for me. Being ‘regular’ and not having to plan my day around my restroom use is something I really look forward to.
VSL#3, unlike other probiotics on the market, is a high-potency probiotic medical food that has been the subject of 170 studies and is clinically proven to be beneficial in the dietary management of IBS and UC. Here are just some facts about it that those us who could benefit from it need to know:
- VSL#3 is a serious probiotic medical food. For more than 15 years, healthcare professionals have trusted VSL#3 for the dietary management of their patients who suffer from the serious digestive issues IBS, ulcerative colitis and ileal pouch.
- VSL#3 is specially formulated with eight strains of live lactic acid bacteria and is 10 times more potent more than the average probiotic, making it the first choice for many doctors because it is one of the strongest available with a proven track record in helping patients with serious digestive conditions.
- VSL#3® products include:
VSL#3® packets containing 450 billion bacteria
VSL#3® capsules containing 112.5 billion bacteria
VSL#3® DS Double Strength (DS) packets containing 900 billion live bacteria. Due to the potency of this formulation, VSL#3 DS is a prescription only medical food.
I have my bottle of VSL #3 in my refrigerator and am starting it this week. As we speak I am on an airplane with worries about my system. I have been traveling a lot which has thrown off my diet and irritating my IBS. It is uncomfortable, has led to bloating and cramping and basically is a distraction to the tasks I have on hand. Regular probiotics don’t seem to help much anymore so I am really going to pay attention to how this is different. I will be reporting back to you guys in the next few weeks with my honest opinion and feedback.
I know there are a lot of things we women are not supposed to talk about. But biological functions should not be one of them. Talking about the things that are out there to help up and having an open dialogue about them can only help others who may be experiencing the same symptoms and conditions.
Now to some interesting facts proving that we don’t suffer alone:
According to a Harris Poll* conducted on behalf of VSL#3, the following was found amongst 607 U.S. adults ages 18+ who have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis (UC) or ileal pouch:
- Nearly half of IBS, UC, ileal pouch sufferers (46%) believe all probiotics are pretty much the same.
- Roughly 2 in 5 IBS, UC, ileal pouch sufferers (41%) don’t understand which strain of probiotics is best to help treat their symptoms.
- Nearly half of IBS, UC, ileal pouch sufferers (49%) are not at all knowledgeable about the differences between a “medical food” and a “dietary supplement.”
