Raise your hand if you have a love hate relationship with your dishes. If you are a mom like me, you hate that they seem to appear out of nowhere. Between breakfast and dinner, and sometimes bedtime snack, they pile up and mock me from the sink. Adding to the disdain I have for the never ending dish brigade is that I have to wash them almost clean before I put them in the dishwasher. I mean, what is the point of having a dishwasher if you have to wash the dishes before you wash the dishes? The LOVE of the dishes? Getting my girls involved in helping. It took some time, it took some patience, but I have a fail proof system that seems to be working. At least for this week. Another love? Discovering NEW Quantum™ Power & Free™ dishwasher detergent!

First things first. I have tried almost everything out there on the market. I have a very high end dishwasher that I got during a HUGE sale years ago. But no matter how many detergents I try, something is always left on a dish or a fork or a plate. It drives me absolutely nuts and I end up rewashing at least a few things. Sure, I may play the overcrowding Tetris game that we all love to win, but I still think there should be a detergent out there that cleans the first time. Now onto the other awesome thing about dishes. My kids, if they work together, are old enough to do them! I use the balance and rewards system. You balance my dishes and don’t drop them, you get a reward! Like a sticker!

I have this great chore chart on my wall in my office. It has things like I Made My Bed and I Helped Mommy and I Helped with the Dishes. When the kids do something from the chart, they get a sticker. When they do it without being told, they get two stickers. As the stickers add up, they get things they really want. Five stickers, they pick a movie, 10 they get to sleep with my in my bed and so on. At 30 stickers they get a new book! If they misbehave, they lose stickers. It is up to them how quickly they earn their stickers.

This really seems to work for my kids and every night, they want to help with the dishes because it is an easy sticker. So one or two of them, usually, pull up their step stools and help me put dishes in the dishwasher. As you can imagine, they are not the greatest at rinsing for the dishwasher.
