It is hard to get away.  Especially when funds are tight and time is limited.

I have recently become a fan of family staycations.   A staycation is a vacation that is in your city or very close to it.  It requires little driving but also can help you discover fun new places nearby for you and your kids!

A few weeks ago I gathered my kids and headed to a staycation at the Embassy Suites in Downtown Houston.  Just an hour from where we live and located on the edge of downtown next to the super fun Discovery Green, the hotel stood tall in the skyline.

First of all, the lobby of this hotel is spectacular!  Decked out in a modern rustic motif with a wall of water adding a relaxing “welcome” sound, the sitting areas were plenty and complimentary coffee and tea sat where they were easily accessible.  It was really lovely.

When we got to our room we were truly impressed!  Embassy Suites has new two room suites that are homey and full of amenities.  Complete with a sitting/ living area, an office area, a kitchenette, a spacious bathroom and a cozy bedroom with an amazing view of the Houston Skyline, Embassy Suites thought of everything!  There was plenty of space for my kids to run and play and relax in this non-standard hotel room!

After getting settled, we headed down to the restaurant that takes up most of the third floor.  We were directed to a kids area where there was a TV with cartoon on, small chairs and tables and coloring.  We ordered and my kids colored and had a great time in a more secluded area of the restaurant.  We had some issues with service but the Embassy made up for it with a wine a cheese tray to our room!

And then later on, as part of the “package” the Embassy sent up fruits and more snacks for us to enjoy in our room!  It was so nice!

We ventured out of the room and across the street to Discovery Green where my girls climbed on the play scape and  cooled off in the water sprinklers.  Even though it was a busy Saturday afternoon, there was plenty of room for my kids to run and play!

Heading back to the cozy – and air conditioned – room, we threw on our swim suits and headed for the modified roof top pool!  Complete with a hot tub and an amazing view of the sky line, the kids played and swam and wore themselves out adequately.

Later that evening, after I had the kids bathed and playing in the room, I headed down to the Manager’s Reception that is complimentary and offered at Embassy Suites on the weekends.  I helped myself to some free appetizers and free glass of wine.  It was a nice adult topper after a busy day of doing with the kids!

As we cozied up for a good night sleep in the comfortable and spacious bedroom, I thought that this was a great place to have a staycation.  Even for one night my kids got to get out and enjoy something new.  They still talk about the “hotel” today!

And as we enjoyed another amenity – the cook to order complimentary breakfast – the next morning, I knew that I was getting more value for the money since so much was included in the stay!

Next time you are wanting to get out and explore something about your city with your family, consider the wonderful amenities of Embassy Suites!   Spacious double room suites, the free Manager’s Reception and more make it a great stay for the whole family!
