Last weekend in Houston was not as hot as it usually is this time of year. So to spice things up, I grabbed a bestie and headed to the Houston Hot Sauce Festival! The outdoor festival was crammed full of people, booths and activities for kids and adults. As I wandered the aisles looking at everything from salsas to sauces to crafts and more, I came across one of the Habenero sponsors, El Yucateco Hot Sauce and their booth! Now, truth be told, prior to learning about the event, I had not heard of El Yucateco Hot Sauce, which can be found on shelves at Walmart. But by the time I left the booth – which I visited several times – I was in love. Not only does this hot sauce company out of Mexico have a serious talent for flavor and heat in their products, but they had some tips and recipes – like CHOCOLATE – that opened my eyes to more possibilities for hot sauce than just a topper!
The friend I took, Jenn, is a huge hot sauce fanatic. The hotter the better. In fact, she entered the lollipop licking contest with lollipops that were so hot I could see the plastic cover sweating and gave it the old college try. You can see the video a little further below!
So she was my ‘go to’ hot sauce taster to help me determine quality, heat levels and flavor. As we tasted all of the varieties of El Yucateco, she declared it’s flavor to be amazing. The product comes in many varieties: Red Hot Sauce, Green Hot Sauce, Caribbean Hot Sauce, EXXTRA Hot Sauce, Chipotle Hot Sauce, Jalapeno Hot Sauce and Black Label Hot Sauce. I personally loved the Green Hot Sauce. It reminds me of the green sauce you get in Mexican food restaurants to dip your chips into.
We loved the new Black Label Hot Sauce that had her sucking on an orange to balance the heat in no time! Psst: El Yucateco showed us that eating an orange piece right after a really spicy food can kill the heat and clean your mouth for the next spicy sauce!
The most interesting thing I learned from the kind and generous team the El Yucateco booth was that hot sauce is really, REALLY, good in making a chocolate dip that will set your guests taste buds on alert! By the time I got back to take a really good photo of it, it was allllll gone. But I have to say, it was sweet, spicy and amazing and I can not wait to make some for my guests! My friend said it would be amazing in a chocolate fondue! But for this chocolate, the team just melted chips, added some condensed milk, some dashes of El Yucateco Black Label Hot Sauce and let it melt together in a crock pot. It was smooth, delicious and, even as I type, I want some more now!
As my friend and I walked around after grilling the team for a while, we enjoyed live music from the Zydeco Dots, homemade tamales (which I added some of my El Yucateco sauce samples to), the salsa drinking contest – it had Ghost peppers in it, y’all… and my friend did the lollipop contest.
It was a great day and a fantastic event for kids and adults! Mark your calendar for 2015 for the Houston Hot Sauce Festival. It was a great way to spend the day! Until then, pick up any or all varieties of El Yucateco Hot Sauce Products at Walmart! Use them as toppers or in recipes to make them really pop!
