I am the first one to talk about how lucky I am in my life. Not only do I have beautiful daughters that make my days so amazing but I get to live in the most enchanting neighborhood surrounded by really kind people. When I bought this house six years ago, my oldest was three. When the divorce happened a few years later, I thought I would have to sell it and move my girls out of what I wanted to be their family home. But because of a fair judge and a lot of hard work on my part to make the changes I needed to make to keep it, I still get to raise my girls in the only home they really remember. Some challenging things came with this long abandoned home when I bought it, though. An acre of yard that was deeply neglected, in need of love and care and toying with the idea of never coming back to life again was the biggest. Now that my yard is on it’s way to it’s natural beauty, I turn my attention to that big, brown barn that just sits there. It’s only use being a kid’s playroom that they run in and out of with their friends! Surely, with the backdrop of the old, antiquated, wooden look, I could create a comfortable space for me to sit and relax while my family plays!
While at Walmart picking up more of Scotts® Turf Builder® Bonus® S Weed & Feed Southern at great prices, I added a few things to my cart for the barn. I wanted to make the doors colorful and fun as well as add some character. Since that area is hard to plant, I decided that a plant holder on the ground along with some planters on the doors would create a place I could keep colorful flowers. I also have an old, rickety, rocking chair that is my absolute favorite to sit in that a colorful pillow would be so nice on. Walmart’s garden center had it all, including the outdoor pillow!
When I got home I grabbed my drill and attached the planters to the front of the doors. Just this small change already made the barn pop as more than just a structure in the yard. When I added the flowers to them, colors of purple, pink and red decorated them with springtime flair!
I then wiped down my Welcome plant holder which has a whimsical flair perfect for a warm spring day and set it out on one side of the barn. It draws the eye away from the side, which needs repair, and is a conversation piece for any guest. I put a beautiful and colorful daisy plant on it that I bought already planted from Walmart and just need to make sure it stays watered.
On the other side, perfectly positioned so that the warm, springtime sun warms my back, I placed my favorite old rocking chair with the outdoor pillow on it. I think it is the perfect touch to a colorful front of this old barn.
I am so excited that I can now sit out and watch my children play, my dogs run and my grass grow from an area out in my yard. It is amazing how a small spruce up of an old barn can make it all feel new again!
