Summer Memories: Bringing the Past and My Grandmother Back to Life to share

One of my most cherished childhood memories is my grandmother. She has long been gone now, the world losing one of the brightest lights ever to be on this Earth.  But I vividly remember summers at her house, the smell of her perfume and the joy of sharing root beer floats on a hot summer day in her beautiful back yard. I often think that the reason I chose the house I live in now is because the yard full of trees and the layout of a ranch house reminds me so much of hers. Her house was always a place of love, comfort, and safety. I even have a door with my girls heights on it as they have grown, just like she did. Grandmother’s house always came with hugs, a competitive game of Canasta and A&W® Root Beer, stacked in the closet, ready to be poured over vanilla ice cream! As my girls grow I want to teach them more about the things in the past that are valuable and special. I want to give them some of my summer memories by bringing the past and my grandmother back to life.

Fun fact: A&W is celebrating its 100th anniversary! Anything that has been around this long, must be good!

Because the memories of the first honeysuckle bush blooming, catching craw-daddies with bacon on a string and the creaking of the old swing set are so precious to me, I want to give memories to my children that they will cherish through life as well. More than seeing a movie together or taking a trip, memories that are simple and easy to recreate for their kids one day. So, at least once a month or so, I grab the A&W Root Beer, some vanilla ice cream and our bikes and we head to the pond in our neighborhood that offers some of the same warm feelings that my grandmother’s backyard always gave to me.

While in Walmart the other day, both picking up my Walmart Grocery order which included some A&W Root Beer and vanilla ice cream, I also ran in to get some smaller bottles that are perfect for a trip to the pond. Walmart always has everything I need and I appreciate that there are so many ways to save time and money shopping online and in store!

Back at home, we packed up and took our new puppy, Kylie,  as well because it’s fun! Some plastic glasses, silicone straws – because we don’t want to have any trash blow into the pond – our volleyball and a good amount of A&W Root Beer and ice cream went with us as well.

At the pond it was playtime first! With the old swings, big trees and the water for Kylie to explore, the day was beautiful and fun! It was hard to stop and take pictures to record the memories because they were being made by the minute! Volleyball, swapping stories with my kids and soaking up the relaxation of just being a family made every moment worth it.

After a little while it was A&W Root Beer float time. As when I was a child, this creamy treat was easy to make and fun to share and fast to disappear! The girls LOVED them and Kylie may have had a taste as well… by accident, of course!

We lost track of time, laughed constantly and relaxed talking about our weeks to come with ease. It was very reminiscent of my grandmother’s and the love and comfort that I received in her backyard.

My children never met their grandmother that I loved so much but maybe, with stories of her and the attempt to recreate the light and memories she blessed me with, they will fall as deeply in love with her as I am.
