We have all seen the Aflac duck quacking his way through commercials, telling us the benefits of supplemental insurance for our families.  And it can be beneficial.  If something does happen, your extra expenses can be covered by Aflac!

But before you even get to that point, you have to choose your benefits for this coming year during your Open Enrollment Period.  Shockingly, most people do not even know what kind of coverage they have.  So Aflac took a survey to see how much we knew about Open Enrollment and how to choose our benefits that are best for our family.

Check out this Infographic that gives the results of Aflac’s Open Enrollment Survey!

I will be in the market over the next year for health insurance and supplemental insurance.  I am shopping around and am shocked at how much insurance is.  However, the real fear is the thought of what would happen to me and the kids if I were hospitalized for a while, like I was earlier this year.

Where would I get the extra cash I would need for unexpected childcare, groceries and more?

Right now, insurance companies are having their Open Enrollment period.  At least our insurance company is.  And during that time, people are generally quick to just repeat what they did the year before or just sign off on whatever costs less per month out of their check.  But, in reality, 1 in 4 Americans choose the wrong coverage for them and their family every year.  Especially those on ‘auto-pilot’.

And, about 56% of Americans are spending $750 more on insurance benefits than they need to.  Incredible, right?

So this year, avoid these mistakes and talk to your HR representative.  Really read your benefits packet and estimate how much you think you  will need in a Flex account based on past years averages.  Take your time and get educated.  Because they last thing you want is to have a medical emergency and bad benefits.

When you are getting your benefit package ready, consider supplemental insurance as well.  Consider your family and how you would take care of them if you were out of work due to injury.  Aflac offers supplemental insurance that are affordable and beneficial!

How about you?  Are you in the Open Enrollment period?  When was the last time you actually sat down and understood what you are choosing year to year for your family?  And how can you do it differently this year?
