Am I Now Obsolete as a Stay at Home Mom?

Today marks a major milestone in my life and my children’s lives.  My three children are all in school for the first time since I started having children over 6 years ago.

Yes, my 3 year old started preschoool two days a week.  And with my middle sweetie, Sarah, in her last year of preschool three days a week and my oldest loving first grade, I am kid free now two days a week for several hours.

As I drove home this morning after the excitement of walking them into their classes, helping little Megan understand the routine – Sarah is a PRO – and taking a million photos, telling them I love them 7000 times and listening to the rules and regulations at the morning meeting, I let the tears spill from my eyes.  They were JUST born!  How does this happen so fast?

I looked in the rear view mirror at my three empty car seats and it hit me.  I was alone.

Totally alone.

Now what do I do?

Sure, I have a blog to write, a house that is way overdue for a deep cleaning, a car that needs vacuuming, a dog that needs walking, exercise that needs to be done.  But I have all of that anyway when my kids are at home all day, every day.

Why do I feel so lost?

So – dare I say it….  lonely?

If I want to go home and sit on the couch for the entire 5 hours and watch bad daytime TV I can.  If I want to lunch with a girlfriend and hit the stores for a day of shopping, I can.  I don’t have anything holding me back.  No kids to worry about tantrums from, no nap times to adhere to, no people to take care of.

And then it entered my over thinking, confused head that this might be why stay at home moms get such a bad wrap. Why people ask them what they do all day.  Especially once the kids are in school!

What DO I do all day?

Now that my kids are in school – even part time – am I now obsolete as a stay at home mom?

Is my job done?  At least the reason for staying home done?

If I am supposed to be reaping the reward of six years of day in and day out poop explosions, siblings fights, sudden boo boos and kids that don’t sleep, shouldn’t I enjoy this little perk?

Instead, despite the fact that I will probably sit at my desk working the entire time catching up from the craziest summer in history, I feel guilty.  Like I should be DOING something.  Like I should be earning my title, proving myself, showing how hard Stay at Home Moms really work!

It is an odd set of feelings rolling around in my head, spilling the truth into my heart, and ultimately decorating this page.

Who am I now?  On these days alone?  Without a child to hold, a smile to enjoy, a tiny hand to play patta-cake with when I want?

And am I alone in my thoughts?  How do other Stay at Home Moms feel on this day?  This monumental thud of freedom that comes right when you think it never will?  Or am I so engulfed in emotion right now that I am creating questions that really don’t need answers?

What are your thoughts?  How did you look at your job as a Stay at Home Mom once your kids entered school?  And how did you deal with it?

How to Protect Kids from Germs for Back to School #PurellBTS

We have been in school exactly one week around here.  And only one of my daughters is back.  My two preschoolers start this coming week.  And, especially with my youngest who has not really been exposed to a bunch of kids all at once, I worry about the typical school year illnesses that come from sharing germs.

Short of wrapping my kids in plastic – I thought about it, trust me! – there is little I can really do about kids who sneeze and then don’t wash their hands, kids who cough on my kids and the germ filled playgrounds they play on.  But I can do a few things to help my kids ward off some of them!

1.  I can teach them to sneeze and cough into their elbow as opposed to their hands.  I don’t know many kids who dig into the crayon bin with their elbows so I think this is a good way to help keep my kids from spreading anything to others.

2.  I can teach my kids to wash their hands!  Seems like a common sense type of process, right?  But when I say wash their hands, I don’t mean run them under water and then wipe them on their pants.  I mean get the soap, lather up, rinse and then use a towel or dryer to dry them.  Kids are in a hurry most of the time, at least mine are, so teaching this entire process can be tough! I try to tell them to imagine little germ men on their hands and they have to get them all off! I hear them in the bathroom ‘fighting’ the men so it must be sinking in!

3.  I can teach them to help other kids get a tissue or a towel if they need one.  Kids helping kids is one of the best ways, I think, for kids to learn important things.  When one of them sees a friend who needs to sneeze, handing them a tissue is just nice.  And it might help keep my child form getting hit with the sneeze bugs!

4.  I use NEW PURELL® Advanced Hand Sanitizer!  The new Advanced formula offers enhanced germ killing power while still being soft and gentle on the hands.  Whether I tether it to their backpacks or donate some bottles to the classroom, I know PURELL® Advanced Hand Sanitizer can help keep my kids hands clean between washing and can keep even more germs at bay!  I buy mine at my local retailer and have a supply ‘on hand’ at home and in the car too!  Right now get VALUABLE COUPONS to help save on PURELL® Hand Sanitizer!

LIKE PURELL® Hand Sanitizer on Facebook for the Latest News and Coupons!

5.  I am honest about when my kids are really sick!  I know my kids and I know if they are starting to come down with something.  So I make an effort not to send them to school if they are getting sick.  It’s just a common courtesy to keep your kids home if they are.  I know not everyone can do that, but I try to be as courteous as I can to the mom whose child gets my child’s cold because I sent her to school with a fever.

What are some tips you have for keeping your kids healthy and germ free during Back to School?  I am all ears as I would rather hear about the great things my kids learned at school rather than the Doctor telling me how many days she has to miss!

Boys and Girls Club of America & Disney’s Tools for Back to School + Round Up with JCPenney

Back to School!  It is all we have heard for the last 6 weeks, wouldn’t you say?  My kids and I have been prepping for as long as well.  From putting in place a schedule that we have tried to adhere to to picking up good foods, fun clothes and more for that first week of fun!

Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA) has been gearing up as well! In fact, they have, along with Disney, launched the Back to School Tool Initiative.   Basically, this is interactive fun for you!   All you do is play the Back to School Trivia game and for every 5 right answers, school supplies are donated to kids who really need them!

And don’t worry about missing the answers, they kind of help you out along the way (at least they helped me!).  Once you are done with your 5 questions, it tells you that a donation has been made!  How awesome is that?  Just take 30 seconds to answer and a child who needs a notebook, pencils, a backpack and more gets a valuable tool for a successful school year!

But Boys and Girls Club is not done there!

In August – and we still have time left, guys – JCPenney and BGCA have teamed up to help kids that need it too!

Just make a purchase at any JCPenney and tell them to ROUND UP your purchase!  Yep, that is it.  Super easy.  Your round up amount will go to the BGCA. Can you imagine how many kids we can help just by rounding up while picking up school things that we need anyway?

But BGCA is more than just raising money to help.  Check out the educational content and Back to School Tips that really help!  Every need ideas for Helping Kids Set Goals?  That and other valuable tips are available on the website.  Just check out the left hand side after you answer the quiz questions mentioned above!

These easy to do and wonderful programs take little effort from us all but make a huge impact for those who need it!  Take the quiz, Round Up at JCPenney and get some awesome tips to make your Back to School efforts easier.  All for the benefit of the Boys and Girls Club of America!

Create a Schedule for Back to School with Elmer’s and the Online eGuide #MomsGuide

A few weeks ago I told you about the BEST thing for help with back to school!  The Back to School eGuide has not only given me expert advice on products that will help make the transition and school year easier, but it has helped me make decisions on what I need to focus on. School supplies, snacks, and clothing.

As a mom who is sending all three to school for the first year ever – 2 to preschool, 1 to 1st grade – this guide has been really valuable!

Another benefit I have gotten from the guide is ideas!  And the desire to get organized!  And my favorite way to get organized is to do crafts with my kids that will help me guide the day and stay on track!

So, armed with the idea that I would make a ‘schedule board’ and my kids would decorate some new school folders, I checked out the eGuide for opinions on products that I could use to help me!

Of course, if I am going to do any craft, I’ll need Elmer’s Glue and Products to help me along the way!  As I read the guide, I made a list of what I needed.  A small tri fold board, Elmer’s Painters Pens, Elmer’s School Glue, Elmer’s Glue Sticks and so on.   I grabbed my ‘I am so over this summer thing’ kids and headed to Walmart!

Happy to be out, we lazily shopped noticing the great Back to School display with Elmer’s products in it, the Champions for Kids donation box and items to give to kids, and the great selection of Tyson Chicken snacks that will make great snacks for after school.  My kids and I absolutely love to do crafts together!  In fact, we have spent a good part of the summer inside in the air condoning crafting with stickers, constructions paper,  Elmer’s glitter glues and more!  So this trip was right up our alley!

We grabbed everything in no time and headed home to make our Back to School crafts!  I noted to myself to donate to the Champions for Kids program when I did my back to school shopping for the girls! I also loved the back to school stickers I found!  I instantly imagined a “Welcome to the School Year” craft for my girls teachers with these!  How fun would that be?

Once home, the girls and I talked about what we would do.  Megan wanted to decorate her very first Back to School folder with her horsey stickers, Katie was all about the peace sign and Sarah wanted to sparkle up her ‘I have to have PURPLE’ folders with the Painter’s and more stickers!

I set to work on the ‘Rules for School’ board that is more of a schedule than rules.  But using the word “Rules” in my house seems to work better than schedule!

So on my trifold board, purchased because it is sturdy and will last the year, I wrote out the times and activities that needed to happen on a school day around here!  With three young ones and two different schools, we’ll need to learn this routine sooner than later!  So, we are starting it ASAP!

We used to glue sticks to adhere some back to school appliques and the kids used to the glue to put pictures of themselves on their folders!  The craft really got them excited about school in a few weeks and is making it easier for me to discuss the earlier bedtime with them too!

So now that we have our ‘rules’ and our decorated folders, we are just in need of our clothing from CookiesKids.com and a trip to Sears! And though summer is coming to an end and it seems a little sad, the excitement of the fresh new year will make all of the busy time right now well worth it!

How are you preparing for back to school?  Have you bought school supplies, snacks and clothing yet?  Be sure to check out the eGuide for great tips and ideas!

‘Back to School’: A Useful Guide for Moms #MomsGuide

I can not believe it is time to start thinking about back to school!  Glue sticks, packed lunches, new shoes and clothing… it is all so overwhelming!  And for a mom who is still new to this process- my oldest starts 1st Grade this year – it can be confusing too!

I am already a little apprehensive about Back to School.  This will be the first year that all three of mine will be in some sort of school.  The little ones in Preschool – Megan’s first year! – and Katie in 1st.  I am sure the chauffeur in me will be screaming by the end of week one but I am looking forward to some much needed time alone in the house.

I am also a little sad, though.  My babies are growing up and though I know they will be so excited to be back in school, it is still bitter sweet!

Despite how I feel, however, the girls are excited and ready to G O!  The older ones are already teaching Megan how to walk with her backpack and carry her lunch pack.  They are playing teacher and student and Katie tells everyone that will listen that school is starting soon and she is a first grader!

I am also filled with a little fear, I admit!   With all three going it is time to get organized and make sure that all three go to school with what they need.  Like Tyson Chicken for their lunch, Elmer’s school products for their crafts and more and beautiful clothing from one of my favorite online shops, Cookie’s Kids!  And let’s not forget about the amazing styles in store at Sear’s!  I am already starting lists, cleaning out the hooks where their backpacks and lunch packs will hang, and preparing to be completely harried the first of the year!

As I am shopping online and preparing to head to stores, all three girls are next to me giving their opinions.  And by opinions I mean, “I want that!” and “Get me that, mom!”  But they are very instrumental in telling me what they would like!  It is kind of fun, actually, as I am getting great ideas of their personal styles!

One place that I have discovered online that is helping me and my girls choose the best items, organize our thoughts and what we need and giving me great ideas to make back to school even more fun is the Back to School EGuide that I found online!

Open publication – Free publishingMore back to school

This is so super helpful for busy moms looking to start their kids Back to School experience off with a bang!  Anyone sending a child or grandchild Back to School this year should take some time to look over these great products, read the expert tips and plan your back to school shopping like an expert!

We are already so busy with everything else that every useful tool helps!  And the Back to School eGuide is one that I could not do this without!

Elmer’s Helped me #BagItForward to a Deserving Teacher #CBias

One of my absolutely, most satisfying things to do with my time is to give back.  And when it comes to doing something for a child or teacher, I do everything I can to make it as special for them as possible.  I don’t do it for a thank you. The smile and the total astonishment in someone doing something for them is all the reward I need.

So when I saw that a Simple Service Project was posted on the Champions for Kids website, you know I jumped right in, feet and heart alike!  They are asking that people #BagItForward with a giving back campaign with Elmer’s.  We are asked to create a school supplies kit for someone in need.  I know a LOT of people who could benefit from this and was happy to do something to give back! Especially to a teacher.  I’ll just pretend she is Mrs. Vera, my 4th grade teacher, who taught me to love myself and let it show in my work!

I headed to my Walmart that seems to be a week behind the times and prayed that the School Supplies aisles were lined and the next year’s school lists were out.  Well… true to form, they were half done.  But no forms.  Never fear, I walked over the Elmer’s display, filled up on glue products, flipped one over and scanned the QR code.

Why, you ask, did I do that?  Because I recently learned that for every photo uploaded to Elmer’s 1st Day App, Elmer’s will donate one product to The Kids in Need Foundation (KINF) (up to 200,000 products).  And, because the app is just cool!  The Elmer’s 1st Day app is a FREE mobile app that lets parents capture those memorable “1st day” photos year after year. And for teachers, it provides a unique platform to share photos of their classrooms, school projects and more with family and friends.

You can download the app super fast on your iPhone or Android or you can scan the QR code on the back of Elmer’s products and the back to school list at your fully stocked, up to date, Walmart!

Once I played around with the app, I loved it! And since every time I download a photo, I help Elmer’s donate products, I am more than happy to snap those precious photos and share them with those I love.  It will be SO cool to look back year after year and see how my kids grow!

As I wandered through my Walmart, breaking out of my daze of playing with my new app, it dawned on my how many Elmer’s products actually span the store.  From our half- done back to school display to the crafts area, office area and even coloring aisle, they are just everywhere!  I had no problem filling up the teacher’s basket.  In fact, I had to put some stuff back!

Check out my entire shop below:

From cool cutting scissors by X-ACTO to tons of glue sticks and school glue, I wanted to make sure that a hard working teacher that bears the burden of purchasing a lot of her supplies over the year was off to a good start!

I checked out of Walmart and headed home with my 2 loaded bags of loot.  And then I went out of town with strict instructions to the kids to not touch. Amazingly when I returned, they sat there, untouched!

So, today, having chosen my worthy teacher, Tiffany, who is not only an Honors English Teacher at the Young Men’s College Preparatory Academy in Houston, TX but also takes on the all important job of school councelor, I was ready to create my basket and take it to her!

I arrived at her home and surprised her and she was so incredibly thankful.  But not ready for photos.  So she emailed me a photo of herself with the basket a little while later when she was more “presentable”.  She gushed all over Facebook how grateful she was, posted in our neighborhood group how appreciative she was and sent me private messages of thanks.  It made me feel really good to do something for a someone who does so much for our kids.

In my opinion, teachers are always in need.  And I loved being able to do this for one.

Take some time to #BagItForward this month and then come back and tell me all about it!  I would love to hear all of the details!
