Summer is upon us and I, for one, am ready for the school year to fade away as sun tan lines appear. I have birthday parties, the 4th of July and the lazy summer days to celebrate. I have books to read, movies to stay up too late watching and friends to spend time with. As I was walking around Walmart the other day, I saw a new item that got my thirst quenching and my imagination ticking for those summer months. Kool-Aid now has 96 ounce containers of already made drinks! I imagined fruity iced teas, ice cubes to add to water and so much more! I also grabbed some of the packets of Kool-Aid because I wanted to make Red White and Blue Cupcakes, too!
Now, I know what you are thinking! How am I going to use Kool-Aid to make refreshing drinks when they are already made and Red White and Blue Cupcakes? With Kool-Aid? Both good questions. Both easily answered!
I have been known to drop a lot of moola on flavored waters, teas and more. But after a while, I get tired of the Peach and the Lemon and the flavors out there. So as I carried my 96 ounce Kool-Aid into the house I thought, what about Watermelon Iced Tea? Hmmm….
So, I grabbed a glass, used lemon to wet the rim, dipped the top in sugar – to add to my sweetness, ya know – and added ice. I then added equal parts of Kool-Aid Watermelon flavor and unsweet iced tea. I sipped to taste and instantly had a new, refreshing beverage that is easy to make and like nothing else you will find on the shelf!
After that, I got creative! I added the Grape flavor to lemonade for Grape Lemonade and added Cherry to ice… ’cause Cherry is my fave all on it’s own!
The new Kool-Aid 96 ounce bottles are convenient, ready made and perfect for getting creative!
But why stop there? I have a party planned for the 4th of July this year and I need some sweets that will impress. As I looked at my array of flavors of Kool-Aid packets, an idea formed that is a little unique. Red White and Blue cupcakes!
Could I do it? Would they taste too fruity?
Well – yes, they have a unique, fruity flavor from using the Blue Raspberry Lemonade packet for the blue and the Cherry packet for the red, but they were a yummy fruity flavor that were different enough to impress those pesky taste buds!
- 1 Box White Cake Mix
- 3 Eggs
- Oil (read box instructions)
- 1 packet Blue Raspberry Kool-Aid
- 1 packet Cherry Kool-Aid
- 1 can white icing
- Mix cake as directed on the package. Separate batter into three bowls. Add ¼ packet of Blue Raspberry Kool-Aid to one and ¼ Cherry to another. Leave one bowl white. You can add a smidgen of sugar to the Blue Raspberry to tone down the flavor for taste. Scoop a spoon of red, a spoon of white and a spoon of blue into cupcake liners. Bake as directed.
- Separate the white icing into three bowls. Add the Kool-Aid packets to the red and blue bowls to taste and mix well.
These cupcakes come out pretty, festive and tasting a little on the yummy side. I love Raspberry and that is the flavor that comes out the most. But the Cherry mixed with the Blue Raspberry is a unique taste that everyone will want to try.
I love that Kool-Aid keeps coming out with usable products that are fun to incorporate into my day. You can find the 96 ounce bottles on shelves too. What flavor combination would you use to make something unique for a fun twist in your day?
