Now, I know what you are thinking. Milk is a drink, not a food. Many  of us may not even think much about our beverage choices. But the reality is, what we drink can be as important as what we eat. Adults and kids take in about 400 calories per day as beverages, according to My Plate. So it’s important to remember that beverages can be a key source of nutrition in our diets, and should be carefully selected.

I know a lot of us like milk alternatives as well, and they can be used in this recipe, but milk and non-dairy alternatives to milk are not created equal. The naturally-occurring nutrients in many non-dairy milk alternatives, like almond milk, soy milk and coconut milk, are not the same as in cow’s milk. In fact, few can match the full nutrient package found naturally in milk, which contains calcium, phosphorus, protein, potassium and B vitamins. This means that many non-dairy milk alternatives often fortify their products with these nutrients.

I like that it has high-quality protein for lean muscle and that it has Vitamin A for a healthy immune system. For the kids – and I suppose for me as I enter my 45th year – I really like that milk has Bone-building nutrients like calcium, Vitamin D, and phosphorus.

Aside from the fact that milk is nutritious and delicious, it is also on almost everyone’s budget list. A gallon of milk is relatively inexpensive compared to other drinks, like juice and soda, and so much better for us too!
