It does not take much to live a happy life. It takes loving those who love you, showing appreciation to yourself and others and exhibiting kindness any chance you get. Some people thing money is the answer to happiness, I say it is personal relationships. Whether with your children, your friends or yourself, taking the time to just be present and aware of what the moment is all about can make or break a day. Another secret I am learning is that if you feel good, you want to do good. So slowly, but surely, I am making an attempt to learn as much about more natural products that I bring into my home. Taking the chemicals out whenever I can and replacing them with more natural products can only be beneficial to me and my children. I already use products like Tom’s of Maine Antiplaque & Whitening Peppermint Fluoride Free Toothpaste and Unisex Long Lasting Apricot Deodorant. But recently I switched my kids to Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry™ Fluoride Toothpaste and, for my 8 year old, Tom’s of Maine Wicked Cool! toothpaste. I feel better as a mom offering better alternatives. Recently, I wanted to show a friend how much I appreciate her so I created a Spoil Me More Naturally Gift basket. Included are my favorite Tom’s of Maine products and my Homemade Body Scrubs and Homemade Linen Spray. I want her to relax in the evening and remember that she is thought of, even on the toughest days!
A dear friend of mine made this body scrub for me a while back. I was so impressed with the aroma and the softness it left on my skin that I begged her for the recipe. It is so simple even I can do it. What I love about it is that it really makes me feel like I am exfoliating and softening even my roughest skin. Not only can I pronounce all of the ingredients in it, but I know that what I am topically applying is safer for me than some things I can buy in store. Tip: Be careful of your eyes if you choose to use it on your face.
- 3 parts sugar to one part oil
- Recommended: Use Almond oil. If you can not find it, Grapeseed oil will work as well. Avoid olive and coconut oils if you can.
- 2-4 drops of your favorite essential oil
- In a large bowl, add your three parts sugar to your 1 part oil. I used 4 cups of sugar for 4 scrubs with 1½ cup of oil. I then separated the scrub into 4 bowls and created my aromas. One Lavender, One peppermint, one Lemon and one Lemon Peppermint.
- Store in an air tight jar and use when you want.
I love to experiment with the oils I have. I created a Lavender Scrub, a Lemon Scrub, a Peppermint Scrub and a Lemon Peppermint Scrub. My friend loves Lemon Lavender too! You can create what you want and what smells good to you. Either way, the sugars will exfoliate while the oils soften your skin and you will walk out of your shower feeling beautiful!
My Homemade Linen Spray is even easier, if that is possible! Just add 3 ounces of water, an ounce of Vodka (or witch hazel if you can find it) plus 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil to a spray bottle. That’s it! Use it at bedtime on your pillow to give you that wonderful aroma as you fall asleep! I made Lavender for my friend in case she needs calming and Peppermint in case her allergies need to be tamed at bedtime.
For all of my products, I shopped the aisles of Walmart. They have the Tom’s of Maine I love on the toothpaste and deodorant aisle and the prices are fairly reasonable. I also found my mason jars, my labels for my printables, my basket in the craft area and my ribbon to dress it all up!

The printables were so much easier than I anticipated. I bought the Avery circular sticker labels and used their website to choose a design and print them. My labels are below but you can alter and change them on the site whenever you want to! Labels give the homemade items a cleaner look and clearly mark them so that the recipient of the gift knows what they are.
For my basket, I lined the bottom with a thick burlap I found in the craft area of Walmart and added a ribbon to finish it off. When I was done, I was pretty proud of myself. I don’t know anyone who would not want to be spoiled a little with natural products that really work!
Tom’s of Maine natural personal care and oral care products are made with no artificial colors, flavors, fragrances, or preservatives. Neither are my scrubs or sprays. So I feel really good giving something that is beautiful and endearing to my friend! Or to myself!
How do you live a happier life? How have you changed the products in your home to live a more natural, take better care of my lifestyle? I would love to hear! Leave me a comment below!
These recipes are awesome! I never thought to make my own linen spray. I like how you incorporated different essential oils in both the scrub and spray. #client
Thank you! They both smell amazing and it gives me one more thing that gets me closer to all natural! :)
