None of us ever think it will happen to us but the truth is, fires do occur. When they do, we need to be ready. To make sure we, and our children, get out safely should the unthinkable happen, we need to take steps now. For instance, when we change our clocks back later this month, it is also a great time to change those fire detector batteries! I have my calendar marked and picked up my 9V Energizer® MAX® batteries while at Walmart this weekend. I do have another fire/ carbon monoxide detector in the house that required AA batteries so I picked them up in the Energizer® display as well. I am all ready but still, I don’t know if my kids really know what to do should a fire break out in the house, much less how to make sure the smoke detectors are up to par! So I made a Fire Safety Tips Memory Game that I know will hammer home the message in a fun way on a scary topic!

The basic thing needed to keep my family safe is to remember, on November 1, when I change my clocks, to also change my detector batteries throughout the house. Now, my smoke detectors are wired to the house but I still need to make sure that the battery back up is working. Therefore, this is a task I am adamant about getting right twice a year. I want my kids to grow up with the same knowledge!

Energizer® has partnered with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) for 28 years on the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery program, and they have an incredibly important goal: to change behavior and save lives. I learned about the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery™ program many years back and think it is brilliant. Even if you open your detector and see a battery that has not expired, change it. You do not want it failing in an emergency and the minimal cost of keeping it up to date is worth it!

In fact, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire nearly in half!! Considering that, on average, families have less than 3 minutes from the time the first smoke alarm sounds to escape a fire, I would say it is a very important thing to keep up to date. Head to Walmart now and get your Energizer® MAX® batteries so you already have them on hand!

When thinking about sharing the same information with kids, along with teaching them what to do if a fire does break out may seem like a daunting task. Our schools teach kids the basics but, as with all important, possibly life saving information, we should be driving the same points home! Especially on the matter of how to get out of the house should one break out.

One of the most confusing things for my kids on the escape route in our house it that I showed them how to open the window, or break it to escape, and they were worried. First, they are all on alarm so if the kids have to get out, the alarm will sound. Second, they know they are not supposed to break windows. But once I said it was OK and to ignore the alarm, they seemed to understand that the point was to get out.

But I still had work to do. So I purchased a foam board and some colorful markers at Walmart and set out to make a fun Fire Safety Tips Matching Game for them.

Not only do the kids have to match the cards but each pair drives home and important point about fire safety. Like Change the Clocks, Change the Smoke Detector Batteries and Don’t Hide from the Fire but Get Outside! I love these because the kids think they are fun but I know they are learning!

My job as a mom is to do everything I can to make sure my kids are not only safe, but have the ability to save themselves as well. They know all about stranger danger and the scariness of wandering off. So teaching them Fire Safety Tips is a must as well!
