It is almost time for back to school!! I mean, awww, man… summer is almost over… But seriously, the time is coming to start purchasing items that are needed for the kids to head back to school! One thing that I always have on my mind when purchasing any item for back to school, or year round, is whether or not the item has Box Tops for Education on them. You have seen them, right? Those little pink Box Tops on a variety of items can be collected and given to your school. The school turns them in and gets a certain amount per Box Top for Education! Schools can earn up to $20,000 per year which is a huge help when budget time comes. All we have to do is purchase specially marked items, like Hefty Trash Bags, cut the Box Tops for Education out and then turn them into the school. We do this every year. But I have to admit, I lose a lot. My current method of tossing them in a tub on my counter did not work. So, with the help of my super creative and crafty friend, Heather, we created a DIY Duct Tape Magnetic Envelope that sticks to my fridge and allows me to collect and turn in my Box Tops for Education easier!
The best part about this craft is that it is fun for kids to do as well. When they make the envelope and stick it on the fridge, it serves as a reminder to look for specially marked products that have Box Tops for Education on them! The super cool thing about Hefty Waste Bags is that they are the ONLY trash bag brand that is participating in the program! In addition to getting a high quality, fresh smelling trash bags in your home (I LOVE the Lavender Vanilla and Clean Citrus), you get 4 Box Tops for Education!! This is a limited program though so when you find the Hefty Waste Bags with the 4 Box Tops, stock up! I found a ton of them at Walgreens! We all need trash bags, right? So why not get the ones that absolutely benefit your schools? In fact, the Hefty brand has raised more than $3 million in contributions to schools by partnering with Box Tops For Education!
Back to the DIY Duct Tape Magnetic Envelope! I went to my local store and let my kids choose the duct tape. With movies on the mind they picked one of their favorite characters and some complementary colors! I found some ruler masking tape which I thought would be a great fit too! Check out all you need below to do this craft!
- Paper Bag
- Hefty Trash Bags (the Kitchen ones work great)
- Scissors
- Stapler
- Glue Stick
- Duct Tape of your choice
Now for the step by step to make your DIY Duct Tape Magnetic Envelope! Watch the video on Instagram too!
Open your paper bag and cut it to lay totally flat. Using the scissors cut a piece that is about 6 inches wide and the length of the bag. Fold over the end about an inch. Then fold that end into itself a little over half way up the bag, leaving enough to make a flap. Fold the flap over and make sure you know the pattern.
Unfold the bag and lay it on a Hefty bag. Cut the Hefty bag so that it is the same size as the paper bag. This will help the Box Tops for Education slide out of the envelope easier when it it time to turn them in. Staple the bottom of the Hefty bag to the bottom of the paper bag and line them up. Using glue dots or a glue stick, secure the Hefty bag to the paper bag and then refold your envelope. Using a stapler, seal the sides of the envelope. Then tape down the Hefty bag at the top of the slot so that it is secure and Box Tops don’t fall behind it. Fold over the top of the envelope into a point and glue or tape the tip down.
Now it is time for your duct tape!
We used green for the body. For the front, we cut the tape longer and folded it over the back. Go all the way up to the opening, overlapping it on the back. Use shorter pieces on the back to make it sturdier! We then used our patterned character tape to do the flap. My friend worked hard to make them match up as she cut and lined up the characters. Put one piece of tape on the front and one inside to make the flap strong and then cut off the excess. We then used the ruler masking tape to line around the crease of the envelope to add to the strength.
Using roll up magnets, we lined the back and stuck the envelope to the fridge!
You are now ready to add your Box Tops for Education that you get off of specially marked Hefty Bags to your DIY Duct Tape Magnetic Envelope!
This craft is so easy that my kids make their own as well! I love that it take up no space but is bright and cheerful as a reminder to purchase products that can benefit my school!
When was the last time you collected Box Tops for Education? How do you keep track of them? What scent of Hefty Waste bags is your favorite?
