Creating my favorite recipes gives me a warm, happy feeling inside. Years ago I made Brown Sugar Chews (a recipe adapted from Ina Garten of The Food Network) at least once a week. I have not made Brown Sugar Chews in a very long time. Mainly because I have been trying to cut down on sugar in the household. But when I decided to take on the SPLENDA® 365 SWEET SWAPS ™ challenge and see how I could swap out SPLENDA® Blends in place of sugar, I pulled out this recipe and put it to the test.

Brown Sugar ChewsI have to be honest, I thought taking out a cup of brown sugar from this recipe and only adding 1/2 a cup of SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend (*Does include sugar) back in would ruin it. I did not think that there would be enough, that it would not be sweet enough and that it would mess with the consistency of the chews.

I could not have been more wrong. In fact, I ended up with a lighter chew that has a lot more flavor than I anticipated!

Ingredients
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ cup SPLENDA (r) BROWN SUGAR BLEND
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ¾ cup flour
  • 1 tspn baking powder
  • ½ tspn vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup chopped pecans
  • confectioner's sugar
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350. Spray an 8 inch round or square with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter. Turn off the heat and add Brown Sugar Blend. Stir until smooth. Add in egg and stir in. The add flour and baking powder. Stir until smooth. Add pecans (optional) and stir. Pour into pan and bake for 20 minutes.

The swap out of the Brown Sugar Blend did not affect the taste or the quantity of product that I got from the recipe. In fact, I remember them being very sweet and much ‘chewier’ but I like this lighter consistency better.
