In this day and age electronics are driving education more than ever.  Computers are in the classrooms and smartphones are in kids hands.  But, if you are like me, you worry that handing them over a tablet might be a tad too much.  Especially when you have to put parental controls on it, all of the apps and games and then worry that they will drop it or hit something that they should not.

VTech InnoTab 2S

That is why I LOVE the VTech InnoTab 2S.  Now, as an owner of a competing product, I had reservations as to how this children’s tablet would be better but I was happily surprised! First of all I LOVE how easy it is to set up Parental Controls on it!  Since it connects over WiFi I was concerned that somehow the kids would end up accessing something they should not.  Almost impossible, I think, on the InnoTab 2S but I was still concerned! So the touch of a button settings is nice.

The other thing I really like is the online Learning Lodge Navigator.  When you get your InnoTab 2S, you plug it into your computer with the USB cord and then set up the Navigator.  Once in you can set up the Warranty, download games, books and more and manage the tablet right from your computer.  Plus you can track your child’s progress on the progress log!  This can help you decide which level of games and books to download.  As they learn, the options are more challenging!  Plus it’s just fun to have a tracking guide so you know your kids are doing well!

Now, let’s talk about something that is important anytime a parent is going to spend some real money on a ‘toy’ – which, BTW, this is so much more than!  Durability and being able to stand up in a house full of kids is important!  I – somewhat shakily – handed the InnoTab 2S to my kids a few weeks ago and forced myself to let them have at it.  I kept an eye on them from afar but let my 3, 5 and 6 year old do what kids do with items.  Did it get dropped?  Yes.  Did it get buried under toys?  Yes.  Did I close my eyes when  I found it under the bed, fearing it had fallen victim to being kicked by accident?  Yes.

Has Built in WiFi

It is still like new though.  I need not have worried at all!  The rubberized corners absorb the shock when it is accidentally dropped and the tough plastic case protects the technology inside.  And there are no scratches or cracks on it’s bright, colorful screen!

The last thing I want to point out on the InnoTab 2S is that you can customize it per child.  So the games and books and such that my 3 year old use are different than the ones my 5 year uses.  And as we download – yes, you will pay anywhere from $2.99 to $24.99 for downloads – we can choose age appropriate items for the girls.  Also, with online tools like VTech University and the Online Learning Center, you can keep your kids up to date on the latest games and books that are disguised as entertainment but geared towards learning!

I do think that this kids tablet is a BUY!  The only drawback is that you have to purchase the games and books after the fact.  But I have only had to download 2 so far and they have been entertained and have not asked for more.  So I don’t think it is going to kill my buget to download 1 or 2 a month.  Money I would probably spend on books anyway!
