This Book is out of Control is the latest in the series

You all know by now that books and reading is the #1 past time the kids and I both love. The smartest thing I think I ever did was to turn one of the bedrooms into a children’s library! I am constantly adding to my collection and donating those we have grown out of. My favorite additions to the libraries are those books that can activate my children’s imagination and become a page turner. One of the quickest ways to gauge that is if one of my kids says that their teacher read it to them at school! The book, ‘This Book is Out of Control’ is one of those books. One of three in the series from Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group and written by Richard Byrne, these books offer color and creative story lines that kids love!

In this follow-up to This book just ate my dog! and We’re in the wrong book!, Bella and Ben and that adorable dog are back for another (mis)adventure in This Book is Out of Control.

This Book is out of control is fun and colorful

Bella, her dog, and her friend Ben are back in another interactive picture book. Ben wants to show Bella his new remote-control fire truck. When he presses the various buttons, the fire truck does nothing. However, Bella’s dog is flung, spins, and even speaks. Working together with the help of readers, Ben, Bella, and the pooch are able to set things right. The final page is a letter to readers testing whether they paid attention to the havoc the remote caused. As he did with This Book Just Ate My Dog! and We’re in the Wrong Book!, Byrne breaks the fourth wall and engages children with giggles and prompts. He continues his habit of using the book’s gutter, this time as the wall separating the inside of Bella’s home from the outside. The artwork beautifully downplays the background, allowing the hilarious chaos to be front and center. VERDICT An excellent addition to interactive or book-themed storytimes.—Shana Morales, Windsor Public Library, CT
