When I heard Lane Smith had a new children’s book out I may have done a little happy dance. I grew up on many of the books he illustrated and didn’t even know he had begun writing his own. When discovering There Is A Tribe of Kids, I went down a rabbit hole of memory as I looked up all the books Mr Smith has worked on previously.

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, The Stinky Cheese Man, and Math Curse were my personal favorites as a child. While the stories were great, what always makes a picture book? The pictures of course!

Inspiring artwork from Lane Smith in his new book, There is a Tribe of Kids

In true Lane Smith style, There Was a Tribe of Kids is full of vibrant pictures that take you right to the scene of the story. As a boy heads out on a journey of the world, kids will learn the group names for different animals. It subtly teaches that no matter how big or small something is, it belongs to a family – or a tribe. My favorite part of reading books to kids is that first time when you turn a page and their eyes go wide. My nephew did not disappoint as we neared the end of the journey and found where the boy called home, in his tribe of kids.

We really can’t talk about this book without mentioning the illustrations. Simple, and to the point, it leaves plenty of room for the kids to add in their own imaginations. After you finish reading the book, you can download this fun Activity Kit. You’ll find fun Connect the Dots, Picture and Word Searches all based around the beautiful illustrations from There is a Tribe of Kids.
