Why My 2013 Chevy Equinox is Not A Downgrade

About three months ago it hit me that I seriously had to downsize my life.  Less spending, more saving, more eating in, less ‘extras’.  One of my largest expenses at the time was my beloved Texas Edition Chevrolet Suburban.  I loved it and it was my dream car less than a year ago when I purchased it.   But as I transitioned from a two income to one income household, I had to get smart.  A high car payment and gas costs could be cut.

So, with a heavy heart, I drove my wonderful SUV over to the awesome people at Parkway Chevrolet in Tomball, TX.  I worked with them when I drove a Chevy Traverse last year and they were friendly, helpful and became my go to dealership.  Forbes Durdin and his family welcomed me in and I have felt like I can go to them for anything I need at any time.

My initial plan was to trade in the Suburban – knowing I would have a heavy loss – and get a used car with payments that were lower.  I just needed whatever it was to fit 3 car seats across the back seat. I did not care about anything else.  I just needed my kids to be able to fit.

As I went in and started talking to the sales person, I explained my dilemma.  They took the Suburban back to look at it and came back with a quote.  It was a very heavy loss and I did not think I was going to be able to do the swap.  And then Forbes walked in and about an hour later, I walked out with a brand new, only 5 miles on it, 2013 Chevy Equinox at lower payments than I expected and with half the gas costs.  I, literally, had tears in my eyes at Parkway’s ability to work with me and make this happen.  It absolutely could not have anywhere else!

I have been driving the Equinox for about 2 months now and I have to say, one of my fears of it being too small for my girls and I, is totally unfounded.  My car seats fit just fine and there is enough legroom that the kids can get in and out easily. The back seat, as a whole, moves up and back so when I need more room in the cargo area, I move the kids up.  When I don’t, I move them back.  It is so easy!

The cargo area is plenty big to fit the double stroller, groceries, bikes and anything else I need to haul.  I have had no issue getting suitcases, boxes and so much more back there comfortably.

But the thing I love most about my Equinox is the drive.  I really thought that going from the large, smooth Suburban to a smaller, less heavy crossover would be a rough transition.  But the Equinox is so surprisingly smooth that I actually prefer it!  In fact, a friend and I went on a road trip last weekend and she drove one way and even commented on how smooth the drive was.  She felt like it was smooth but sporty and a lot easier to drive than her current SUV!

Add to the smooth ride, sleek, sporty design the incredible gas savings and the creative storage and ease of driving and I would have to say that the 2013 Chevy Equinox is not a downgrade at all!  In fact, as much as I love driving it and fitting into parking spaces easily, I would say I actually upgraded!

Have you ever downsized and liked the smaller car better?  Tell me about it!

5 Things I LOVE About My Chevy Suburban

Nope, this is not a sponsored post.  And nope, I was not asked to do it even though I have an affiliation with Chevy.   I simply LOVE my Suburban that I bought this year and wanted to share why!  Plus, I have so many ask me about gas mileage and the ease of use with three kids that I thought it might help some of you who are holiday shopping for cars for your family this year!

I LOVE my Chevy Suburban!  I will probably cry the day I have to put her to rest.  She is sturdy, fun to drive, pretty and reliable.  But there are some things you might not know about a Suburban and they are less advertised than the safety features!  So, I thought I would share them!

5 Things I LOVE About My Chevy Suburban

1)  She looks really good as a Reindeer!  Not all cars do, you know?  But this big, sturdy Suburban can fly through the streets with style and grace.  This is a very important feature for the little ones in the family.

2)  The gas mileage is NOT a concern.  My minivan ate $80 a week and guzzled it at an average of 14 miles per gallon.  Everyone told me the Suburban would kill me in gas costs.  The truth is, that same $80 gets me almost a full tank of gas and I average about 14 – 16 miles per gallon.  In fact, my last tank averaged 15.7.  Now, I know there are cars out there that get 40 mpg and more.  But those are little cars that my family would not fit in.  So, for a HUGE car with all of this space, style and usefulness to my family, I get the same bang for my buck as I did in my mommy mobile.  But I look a lot cooler getting in and out of it!

3)  I love the mommy dashboard.  Why do I call it that?  Because with 3 screaming kids all wanting me to change the radio station, turn on the air conditioning, turn off the radio, turn the air higher, roll down the windows – no, not that far, no, mommy, all the way – I keep my eyes firmly on the road and need ease in reading how I am doing.  The dash board is large, easy to glance down at for speed, gas usage and so on.  There are these great little buttons on the side that I can push and get info on my car too.  I just love it and, though it may seem like a silly thing to mention, my last car’s dash drove me NUTS!  LOL

4)  The interior space is awesome!  I sit three car seats comfortably in my Suburban.  That leaves enough space for another car seat if one of my daughters brings along a friend.  An adult can easily fit in the back with the kids too!  I used to sit back with them on road trips and loved it!  PLUS, even with all of the car seats and such, I have a HUGE storage area in the back for groceries, strollers, suitcases and more.  My minivan would never fit the stuff this Suburban does into it.

5)  Knowing every morning that it is going to start!  I love this view – see the video!  There is nothing better than knowing that I will carry my family safely to and from in the Suburban.  It is amazingly easy to drive, rides like a dream, commands respect on the road and makes me feel like more than just a mom!

There is so much MORE I love about my Suburban but this is getting long!  If you have hesitated purchasing a Chevy Suburban because you were afraid it would be too big, take too much gas or you would not be able to handle it, trust me.  This 5’1″ single mom loves her Chevy Suburban and thinks every cool mom should have one!

A Dead Battery, Pouring Down Rain and Two Stranded Moms

Have you ever noticed that if things are going to go wrong it is going to go wrong on a day when you have to get on a plane, get the grocery shopping done and pack?  And with your mother watching your every ridiculous move?

No? Must just be me.

We’ll start at the beginning.  Two weeks ago on a Saturday I bought  a Suburban.  It is beautiful and fantastic and I am thrilled to have it.  A week after my purchase I go out to start it and it won’t start.  I assume that my kids, forever being told to stop playing in my car, left something on that drained the battery.  A dome light or something like that.  My husband jumps the car, it starts and all is well.

I notice throughout the next few days that it is a little slow to start some mornings so I call the dealership – an hour away – and they tell me to bring it in or take it to a closer dealership.  I call the nearest dealership and they can not get me in until 7am the day I leave on my trip.

Also on that day, my parents were coming in to help with the kids as I traveled.  An incredible gesture, I was determined to make the visit as drama free as I could.  Fat chance of that happening.  So that morning I get up at 5:30am with the intention of taking the truck, having a new battery put in and being back before anyone even knew I was gone.

Being up early, I logged into my computer to transfer photos to my travel computer.  But my travel computer would not let me type.  At all.  No matter what.  Thinking I was just not hitting the right keys, I called the 800 number for help and ended up spending an hour on the phone, resetting the entire operating system and missing my appointment.

I reasoned that all was well and that as long as the kids did not leave anything else on, my parents could use the Suburban and have no issues.  Fat chance of that happening.

My parents arrived, my mom and I loaded Katie in the car to take her to school and headed to the grocery store.  My husband stayed home so that he could take me to the airport and my Dad was home with the kids.

We get out of the store, car full of groceries and it is pouring rain.  Drenching, pelting, blinding rain.  Umbrella in hand, we rush to the car, I pop the back and load the groceries and my mom gets in the car.  I get in, shake myself dry and reach for my charger to re-energize my deal phone which had drained thanks to the constant use of it by my kids.

No charger.

Where is my charger?  Oh well, let’s get home and we’ll find it then, I thought.

As mom and I chat I put the key in the ignition and nothing.

Nada.  No click, no turnover, no nothing.

The only thing I hear is the pouring down sheets of rain hitting the windshield.

I look at my mom and she smiles.

I love her.

I pick up my phone to call my husband to come jump the car and remember that it is dead.  So I borrow my moms and call him.

He is not pleased.  Neither was I so I could not blame him.

He heads to rescue us and my mom and I sit, dumbfounded that I am to get on a flight in less than three hours, have a new car full of groceries – including frozen items-  and it won’t start.  I am even more thrilled that it is raining so hard that we can barely see out of the windows and that my mom is witness to it all.

In the 17 hours… OK, 15 minutes that we wait, I get out of my car at least 10 times, in the rain, looking everywhere for my charger.  As many of you know, without our phones it is impossible to run our lives.  I don’t know but one number and he was on his way to rescue us.  So I don’t have the number to the dealership, the kids school, the airlines to see about a later flight… nothing.

I go on and on to my mom about how my husband probably took it out because he thinks leaving them in drains the battery… does he have a point?… and she listens as I talk about how he can never find anything, does not remember anything he ever does and on and on.  Sure I would find it on his workbench when I got home she and I chatted about how I needed to tell him to be more careful.

When my husband pulls up the rain decides to add to the challenge and unleashes buckets from the sky.  I get out, open my umbrella, grab his and he jumps the car which starts immediately.

I get back in the car in time to see my mom reach to put on her seat belt and out falls the tip to the charger… which she was sitting on… the whole time.

No kidding.

Once we stopped laughing, we headed home and my husband headed to the auto parts store to get a new battery.  With a phone charged, I call the dealership and explain the situation and they tell me to mail them the charges for the battery so they can reimburse me and are oh, so sorry that I got a bad one and if I would like, I can bring the car in and get a full check up to make sure there were no more issues.

I was happy with that.

We got home, unloaded the groceries, my dad had reinstalled the Trend Micro security software to my travel computer, I threw my things in my bag, kissed my kids and hopped in my husband’s truck  - who is fresh off of installing the battery and now ha the ‘burban running like a dream again – to go to the airport.

As I reflected on my crazy morning I said a thank you prayer to God for my mom – whose patience and grace kept me calm, my husband – who leap into action to save his nutty wife and her mother, and my dad – who watched the kids, solved my computer issues and unloaded the groceries.  And I thanked HIM once again for letting me feel the appreciation I always have for them even more deeply.

Without all of them, a dead battery, pouring down rain and two stranded moms might have just sat there totally lost in a sea of craziness!
