I can admit that the holiday season is my time to go seriously overboard on everything I do. I get too many gifts for the kids, get too involved in getting the perfect gifts for teachers, neighbors and anyone else I come in contact with and the decorating gets a little insane. It is also no secret to anyone that knows me that my creative bug comes out in the kitchen this time of year. With a renewed love for meringue, I am looking for any reason to add it to a recipe. So when walking around my local Kroger store, taking in the holiday decor and foods, I had to grab *several* bags of OREO Cookies. They have the seasonal ones, the Mint Cream OREO Cookies and more! Loading my cart with fun flavors, I had an idea! What if these were the base for OREO Meringue Christmas Tree Cookies? My overdoes it self felt the rush of adrenaline as I bought a pack of 30 eggs to make my cookies dreams come true!
OREO Cookies are a mainstay during the holiday. Whether you have a pack out during movie night or use them in recipes that make your guests drool and your family want to buy you diamonds, they are the perfect addition to any celebration. A trusted brand for busy moms like me this season, OREO Cookies are a simple, festive treat during the holidays. While at Kroger, OREO Cookies in the cart, I also stocked up on holiday plates and decor, baking items and even some games and stocking stuffers for the kids! I love that there is so much variety to help me out in the aisles of Kroger!
At home I opened my pack of OREO Cookies – just to make sure they were still as yummy as ever, you know – and started to create some OREO Meringue Christmas Tree Cookies! Now, I have never done these before and was surprised at how easy they really were! I took the basic idea of my Peppermint Meringue Cookies and dressed them up differently for these!
When you are at Kroger be sure to get green food coloring, ornament candies, little ball sprinkles and yellow stars to make your tree super festive!
- 6 large egg whites
- 1½ tspn white vinegar
- 1½ cups sugar
- Optional: ½ tspn of any flavor extract
- green food coloring
- OREO Cookies - any seasonal flavor
- Ornament sprinkles
- Yellow star Sprinkles
- Ball Sprinkles
- ¼ cup melting chocolate
- Put over to 200 degrees. Place parchment paper on a cookies sheet and set aside. In a bowl, beat the egg white until they form a still peak. Add the vinegar and beat it in. Slowly add the sugar, beating the mixture gently. Add the extract in any flavor if you want. Add the green food coloring and fold into the meringue. Slowly spoon meringue into a plastic piping bag and cut off the end. Pipe out your trees onto parchment paper. Add your 'ornaments', the star and then sprinkle with the balls. Place in oven for 2 hours. Let cool 1-2 hours. Once cool, melt chocolate in the microwave. Add to the bottom of the meringue and 'glue' to the OREO Cookie. Let set and enjoy!
Please, please use parchment paper for these cookies. They will slide off. If you use something else, they will stick and break. So this is my best tip for making this work easily for you! My next tip is to make sure no yolk or fat of any kind gets into your egg whites. They won’t peak right and it will come out as a soupy mixture that can not be fixed. Trust me, I had to make the meringue twice for this recipe!
If you want your eggs to peak quickly, place the bowl and beaters into the fridge for 20 or so minute ahead of beating them.
When the cookies come out, it may seem like they are going to stick to the parchment paper. Let them cool completely and then you will see them pop off!
Adding the OREO Cookie ‘trunk’ or base makes this cookie pop! You can play with flavor here too as you use OREO Peppermint Cookies, OREO Pumpkin Spice cookies or any other holiday seasonal flavor. I like the seasonal ones because the red goes well with the green meringue trees and the holiday designs are fun too!
The holidays are a fun and blessed time. But all of us run out of time and need some seriously awesome treats to take to parties or to have on hand for that holiday movie night marathon. OREO Cookies on their own are a perfect addition to any table! Dress them up with a Meringue Christmas Tree and you will be the talk of the town!
What recipes do you make with OREO Cookies? I would love to hear!
OREO Cookie balls are always a hit in our house- last year I made them into hot chocolate balls you could dissolve in warm milk. They were a huge hit! However, these trees are too cute not to make, so I will be picking up some cookie sheet parchment paper and trying my hand at your recipe! #client
Please let me know how they turn out!! They are so cute and my kids devoured them!! The OREO makes the whole cookie taste amazing!!
