Summer storms are upon us. In fact, I think every day in July so far, there has been rain, thunder and lightning in our area. Though my grass appreciates finally being watered on a daily basis, my electricity goes out any time the thunder is near. So far the storms happen in the late afternoon and there is enough light to see until it comes back on. But living near the Gulf Coast almost guarantees that a huge storm will come and my power will be out for a while.  When the power goes out here, it is really, really, really dark. We don’t have street lights in our country neighborhood and with 19 tress shading the house, it can be a very scary place for little kids. So, I decided this year, before the potential storms come, I would prepare a kit for kids that will help scare the dark away! With the help of Duracell batteries and some imagination, I have a slide under the bed kit that will keep my kids calm and occupied should the power go out!

Shopping at Walmart while the cousins are in town for fun things to do in the dark can be quite entertaining. The ideas poured out and I tried to keep up. We started small. We got several packs of Duracell Quantum and Duracell Coppertop Batteries. Since my kids are little, candles in the dark scare. Plus, games and flashlights need batteries anyway. So having Duracell in the kit was a no brainer!

My sister in law, Cathy, came up with the most fun idea, I thought! They have flashlights in the camping section of Walmart that are colored. Red, Green, Blue, Yellow and so on. With a little imagination and the right Duracell batteries in my kit, I can occupy my kids with light and fun and distract them from the darkness!  Since I could not find yellow, I added green, red and blue to my kit and we will improvise when the time comes!

I mainly focused on things that would light up in the darkness for obvious reasons. The more light, the more smiles from kids. I found a small light show the will bring smiles for sure, light up stickers that they can push for colorful fun, more flashlights to give them variety, glow creatures, bolt light up balls and more! I also added some fun hand help light games for a distraction when I need it! I also, just for fun, added a colorful boa for tug ‘o war fun!

For family fun I hunted the game aisle. Looking for fun Hasbro games is always a challenge with kids. There are so many to choose from! But when we saw the Despicable Me Operation Game, it was a winner all around. I will tuck it away in the Scare the Dark Away kit and pull it out for all of us to enjoy! Since Hasbro games suggest Duracell batteries, I got extra just for the game!

Kids and the dark don’t mix. But with a reliable kit that includes the necessary batteries, games, light up fun and more that only comes out in the dark, you can help your kids scare away the dark a little easier!

What other items would you add to the kit to help keep your kids calm in the dark? I would love to hear!
