Car’s Life 3: The Royal Heist DVD Review & 3 Winner Giveaway *Expired*

I am currently in the house on a beautiful Texas afternoon with a sick child and one that is bored. We have played with dolls, toys, games and more.  And mommy has work to do, laundry to fold and toilets to clean.

So, I looked at my movie collection and pulled out Car’s Life 3: The Royal Heist.  This new movie out on shelves and online April 23, 2013 is surprisingly super cute.  My girls are literally eating it up as we speak!

Car's Life 3: The Royal Heist

Sparky is back and ready for a new adventure with his buddies.  This high spirited sports car is excited that Queen Limosine is coming to town to attend a charity drag race.  Everyone is going royal crazy, including Sparky! But when the Queen’s jewels go missing, everyone is under suspension and the fun turns to dread!  This whodunit adventure is fun and totally worth the purchase!

I love the lessons about teamwork, cooperation, honesty and friendship.  This is a Dove ‘FamilyApproved’ feature length film as well!  We all know that means good things ahead!

Car's Life 3: The Royal Heist

I have to admit, as I have started typing this, I have stopped several times to watch the movie too.  My kids have not moved, which is perfect for a sick child and one that needed to just SIT!  This colorful movie has them interested, is easy to understand and has a story line that they can learn from!

I know that this movie will soon be one that we see multiple time and my kids will act out daily.  And I can’t wait!

See a Clip:

I popped this movie in and my kids and curled up to take in the fun, laughter, music and dance of the whole Muppet Gang.  With Kermit as Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit and Michael Caine as Scrooge, the characters are fun, colorful and perfectly matched!

I love that this is a great way to introduce this timeless Christmas classic to my kids.  As we all watched together, I answered questions and shared my memories of the story with my kids.  Next time we watch it – it has already been requested again – I will make some hot cocoa and listen to my kids comments and relish in the family time.

The Great Mouse Detective DVD Review & Clip

With the school holidays coming, stockings that need to be stuffed and snow falling on the ground – not here in Texas but maybe somewhere – kids are in need of good, clean entertainment that can also give Mrs. Clause time to wrap some gifts!  And showing them something you loved as a child too is a bonus! Like The Great Mouse Detective on Two-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray/DVD Combo for the first time ever!  Originally released in 1986, this Blu ray collection boasts bonuses and clarity that will make it a new family classic!

The Great Mouse Detective on Blu Ray

Stuff your little ones stocking with the adventures of Basil of Baker Street and Dawson, his sidekick, as they try to solve a crime that sees the kidnapping of London’s top toy maker.  Vince Price adds his voice as these London mice as they aim to out sleuth their archememy, Ratigan – who wants to be a mouse and not a rat – and bring the toy maker home.

Though you may not know this title as well as some other Disney classics, it is a beautifully illustrated and animated movie.  The music is in true Disney creativity and style and my girls really love the story.

Check out the clip below:

Bonus features include ‘So You Think You Can Sleuth” and the making of the movie as well.  I love these behind the scenes look at how classic movies are created.  It makes me want to rush right out and buy an animator’s kit.  Well, not really, but it is a great bonus for the parents watching with their kids!

Be sure to pick up your copy of The Great Mouse Detective and surprise your little one on Christmas Day!

‘War Horse’ An Amazing Movie Opening Christmas Day 2011

This Christmas Day 2011, carve out some time to take the family to a movie that will inspire you and have you believing in the human spirit and the indelible connection between a man and a horse.

I’ll be honest, when I sat down in my seat at the Red Carpet Premier of War Horse in New York City a few weeks back, I was weary that this would be a bloody mess and that I would not be able to stand the animals getting hurt.  Fortunately, I was very wrong and was treated to a film that embodied elegance, heart and joy.

I love this movie.

Steven Spielberg asked his actors to do the impossible – take a novel that was then adapted for Broadway and turn it into a warm, family film that  we want to watch, over and over again.   And he did it perfectly with talented actors that portrayed their characters with great confidence and passion.

What struck me most at the premier was how still everyone was from start to finish.  When I usually see films, there is a lot of shifting and bending down to get things from a purse, and so on.  But we were 45 minutes into the movie when I realized that I had not even put my purse on my lap and was still clutching it tightly in my hand.

It is that captivating!  See an exclusive clip from War Horse below:

The other thing that impressed me most was how the film was shot.   It had almost a theatrical feel to it, with big sweeping landscape views and large, powerful scenes.  The battle scenes even held a sort of “stage” quality as they were designed not for the gore of war, but  for the symbolic measures of war.  The intelligence that was exhibited in preserving the story and not overshadowing it with special effects and impossible to watch drama, is evident.

And make sure you are consciously aware of the music in this film.  A “hidden” character in the film, it drives the movement and the emotion brilliantly throughout!

Steven Spielberg talks about War Horse below:

And the last note I made as I sat, tissue in hand, eyes glued to the actors portraying a story that is both heartbreaking and uplifting, is that it IS a family movie.   I think if your 8 or 9 year old can understand the realities of war and the love of something treasured, then this movie is perfect.  It is rated PG-13 but there is an absence of cursing, blood and inappropriate gestures so, if your child can grasp the concept that it is a movie with a compelling story line, they are old enough for this movie.

I think Christmas Day is the perfect day for War Horse to open in theaters.  The film connects a father and a son, establishes a mother’s wisdom and a boy and a unique animal.

On a day to celebrate family and dreams, War Horse will solidify and honor the human spirit!

The Muppets Movie: More Than a Rainbow Connection

I remember laying in front of my television after dinner, swinging my legs back and forth in my jammies, and anxiously awaiting The Muppet Show with my family.  I rooted for Kermit and Miss Piggy, wanted to snuggle Fozzie Bear and thought Animal was the coolest Muppet of them all.

The series, sadly, ended many years ago.

But today, Thanksgiving Day 2011, Jim Henson’s Muppets gather together and burst onto the big screen once again!  Miss Piggy, Kermit, Fozzie, and a new Muppet, Howard, bring back laughter, music and joy to children – and adults – everywhere!

The Muppets Movie ROCKS!

I was very privileged to have seen this movie at a preview screening and if it were not for the fact that we drove all day, I would go back and see it today, on opening day again!

The cleverly told tale of the Muppets rise and fall and rise again is full of great one liners and lighthearted fun for the whole family.  I loved the story line, the musical numbers were awesome – Am I a Muppet or A Man alone is beyond hysterical and reason enough to go see this movie – and Amy Adams and Jason Segal are sweet and fun in their roles!  It really was a walk down memory lane with a modernized update.

I would say it is a children’s movie, but it is not.  My husband and I sat laughing and caring and hoping right along our three young girls.

This holiday season, take a moment to head to the movies and introduce your children to The Muppets.  If your anything like me, you’ll enjoy watching them watch your childhood friends more than curling up in front of the TV those many years ago.  And discover, like I did, that The Muppets Movie is more than just a Rainbow Connection!

Girl’s Night, ‘Bridesmaids’ & a Contest from Blockbuster Express #CBias #CouchCritics #BlockbusterExp

The other night, I gathered up a few friends, set out some goodies and headed to my nearest Blockbuster Express to rent Bridesmaids, a movie I have been dying to see!  But, being of funny mind and evil spirit, I had a plan for this girls night that was like no other!

But, first, to the process!

I wanted this to be a relaxed Friday night girlie get together with fatty foods, good punch and some serious laughter!  So I headed to my nearest grocery store and picked up some pizza, chips and artichoke spinach parmesean cheese dip (so YUM!), some multi grain chips, a bottle of pink lemonade and some sprinkle cookies!  Oh, and popcorn…  gotta have popcorn.

Happy with my selections, I drove just two miles from my house and found the Blockbuster Express.  I have never used a kiosk to rent a movie so I feared I would be standing out side, looking a little odd punching a screen over and over again as I hit the wrong thing.  But never fear, Blockbuster planned for people like me and made this super easy.  I was in and out in less that 3 minutes, movie in tow, including the time it took to take pictures of the process for you!

And I knew the movie would be there because certain movies at the Blockbuster Express kiosks have an ”In-stock Guarantee“.  If you reserve a movie online at BlockbusterExpress.com or choose it at the kiosk and it is not there, then just send a text to 39777 and they will send you a $1.00 off your next movie rental code!  The guarantee sure makes it easier to know you’ll get the movie you want when you want it!

And then I made a little detour to a little shop that had some things that I would need to make this party just that much more embarrassing fun for my friends!

I got home, kissed the kids, promised my husband I would be home two hours earlier than I actually planned on – gotta give the man hope – and walked to my neighbors house.  Her two teen boys were there and very curious as to what I had in a large, white bag.  So I let them unveil….  bridesmaid dresses!  Yes, the mystery surprise was that my fiends, dear to me in every way, would be asked to put on and prance around in bridesmaid dresses!  Some ours, some from a thrift shop that I HAD to get!

But MY surprise was that her 15 year old son, one to have a sense of humor and a relaxed attitude, took our ribbing to put one on and DID!  I could barely stop laughing long enough to take the photo, thus it being a little blurred!  Now THAT is a fun kid!

So now the dress was out of the bag!  Although, they knew.  I had told them… but I don’t know if they really thought I was going to go through with it!  But when my other friend showed up with her bridesmaids dress, I knew that my friends were well used to me throwing them out in blog world to be talked about for all eternity!

Now, there is another reason that I wanted to bring the dresses into the movie viewing!  Blockbuster Express is running a contest right now called the Ugly Dress Contest and it is SUPER easy to enter!  All you do it take a photo of yourself in your ugliest bridesmaids dress and tweet it to @BlockbusterExp!  When you do, and if you are one of the first 100 successful entries, you’ll get ten codes good for a free movie rental!  But if it is, truly the ugliest, you could win a $250 spa package, courtesy of Blockbuster Express!  How cool is that?   But hurry, the contest ends 11/2/2011!

We sent in some interesting ones…  you can see them on this slide show:

Once the bridesmaids dress fun was done, it was time to watch the movie!  Someone had tweeted to me not to be eating during the movie unless someone in the room knew the Heimlich.   I asked around and decided not to eat.

The movie is HYSTERICAL!!  This The Hangover for women!  The star, Kristin Wiig could not have portrayed the angst ridden, nothing can go right, there is always a new rock bottom, character who was full of smart lines and laughter inducing facial expressions.  She is the perfect fit in this movie and her character was one of my favorites!

But the one who surprised me the most was Melissa McCarthy! YES – Suki from Gilmore Girls!  Let me tell you, this role is such a departure from Suki, and so completely well played by her, that when I think of her now, I think of her as this character.  Brash, honest, self-assured and without a care in the world!  She is the comic genius in this film, in my opinion!

The entire cast was perfectly placed, the plot line was believable and hilariousness, and though some of the scenes were a bit over the top, they were truly important for the movie and make me want to watch Bridesmaids again!

The evening was great fun, with good friends, good food, and a GREAT movie.  It was full of healthy doses of laughter throughout!  Thank you to my friends who shamelessly looked amazing in some awful dresses!

And if you are looking for a good movie to have your own girls night, check out Bridesmaids!  You won’t be sorry!

The Lion King in Disney 3D: Go SEE It + Fun Kid Recipes

For two weeks only, The Lion King in Disney 3D is being released in theaters starting Friday, September 16!!

And I was honored to be able to take my family to preview it a few weeks ago.  Only my husband had seen the movie.  My daughters and I were new to the film.  Nor had I ever seen the award winning play!

I know, I am sheltered.

I have to say, I understand why it won so many awards, so much acclaim, and the hearts of so many.

Since I can only assume that most of you have seen the original, I won’t bore you with non spoiler details.  What I will say, though, is that the 3D effects made this movie even more special than the story line already secured.  I watched my girls try to reach out to the screen, jump back when animals jumped from the screen, and laugh at the antics of the characters.

The music was amazing, the art work stunning, and the heartwarming characters embedded in every viewers heart!

It is too bad that this movie is only in theaters for two weeks!

Grab the kids… the tissues… and the popcorn and make sure you experience this amazing movie in Disney 3D during this limited time run!

Synopsis:

An unforgettable story, breathtaking animation, beloved characters and award-winning music sets the stage for “The Lion King”, a Disney classic that follows the adventures of Simba, the feisty lion cub who “just can’t wait to be king.” But his envious Uncle Scar has plans for his own ascent to the throne, and he forces Simba’s exile from the kingdom. Alone and adrift, Simba soon joins the escapades of a hilarious meerkat named Timon and his warmhearted warthog pal, Pumbaa. Adopting their carefree lifestyle of “Hakuna Matata,” Simba ignores his real responsibilities until he realizes his destiny and returns to the Pride Lands to claim his place in the “Circle of Life.”

And as a little treat for the kids, try out one of these recipes!  I can not wait to see how the kids react to them!

‘The Help’ Movie Review: AMAZING!

Very rarely does anything these days render me speechless.  I usually can come up with at least something to say that is somewhat clever.

But the movie, The Help, based on the New York Times bestseller by the same name is a movie that will absolutely leave you without words to adequately define the experience.

This is possibly the best movie I have seen in a decade… possibly ever.

Very rarely does a person have an opportunity to explore and feel the gamut of emotions that I felt while watching this movie.  From side splitting laughter to deep, intense anger, to heartwarming tears, to real, heartbreaking tears, this movie took me on a journey I have long stopped expecting from any Hollywood product.

The movie follows the stories of three courageous woman in an unusual and ‘unacceptable to society’ friendship on the brink of the Civil Rights Movement.  Brought together on the basis of creating a book from the viewpoint of the segregated class of black maids and a white novelist, bent on writing something that had never been written before, the women experience deep hatred, glorious love, and a lesson of self respect and admiration for humanity.

There was not a person in that theater last night for the preview that this movie did not have a profound affect on. That was evident by the spontaneous bouts of applause, the roar of hysterical laughter, and the silent, but telling times of tears.

The atmosphere in the theater was one of deep admiration and respect for the filmmaker, the story teller, and the amazing cast of actors assembled. And the spontaneous applause at the end told the truth that everyone, man and woman, was deeply touched and educated by what they had just seen.

If you do not leave The Help feeling uplifted, educated, emotional, and touched to the depths of your soul, then you did not pay attention.

If it does not still resonate in your conscious the next day and you do not inherently know that it will affect you for a long time to come, then you really missed out on the true drama, comedy, emotion and depth that this movie offers.

I, as well as my two friends I was with, and fellow blogger who I sat next to, Kristi with FrugallyThrifty.com, will all attest that this is a must see for any person looking for a movie that truly highlights the talents and amazing abilities of storytelling and its impact when done correctly and meaningfully.

I feel deeply honored that I got to see this film.  And I think you will take from it the one word I am using to describe it… AMAZING… as well!

See the Trailer!

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon,  “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s,  who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. The Smurfs Movie Review: Nothing to Be Blue About

The Smurfs in 3D and Read 3D opens today, July 29 in theaters everywhere!

I got to take my whole family to a special preview of the new movie, The Smurfs last night, and I have to say, so incredibly cute and fun!

Not only did it take me back to my childhood and reintroduce me to the characters I fell in love with, but my 5 year old and my 3 year old were mesmerized!  My 2 year old was tired and was a little cranky.  But still laughed and danced right along with the characters!

The storyline was fun and attention grabbing and the girls reported that they did not find anything “very scary” about it at all!  And though I can see why it wears a PG rating, there are a few jokes that are aimed at keeping mom and dad happy, cleverly hidden so only we would understand it, I did not find anything in it to me too mature for my 3 and 5 year old.

I loved the 3D effects and thought that the graphics were spot on.  I thought it was nice that my kids could watch most of the movie without glasses and still see clean lines, instead of 3D blurs all of the time.  In fact, all three had their glasses off by the end!

The Smurfs will make you laugh… a lot!  And it will tug at your heartstrings a bit too.  But it will mostly give you the desire to go out, find a Smurf for yourself, and take care of it for eternity.

But since that can’t happen, the movie will have to do!

I LOVE LOVE LOVED this movie!  My kids had fun and loved it too.

So pack up your kids, wear blue, and enjoy a Smurfy good time with old friends made new again!

*********************************

The Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen in Columbia Pictures’/Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live-action and animated family comedy, The Smurfs. When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the Smurfs out of their village, they’re forced through a portal, out of their world and into ours, landing in the middle of New York’s Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

The Winnie The Pooh Movie: Childhood Rewound

I relived my childhood the other night.  And my daughters were there to see it.

I took my husband and my three daughters – ages 4, 3 and 2 – to the preview of Winnie the Pooh the other night.  The mood was festive, the anticipation high, and the smiles broad!

After Radio Disney entertained the crowd, Sarah went down to the front to show her dance moves to the whole audience, and I got my free popcorn by checking in on Foursquare, we all settled in to watch one of my favorite childhood classics come to life!

I worried at first that the language might be too mature, there might be something scary in the Hundred Acre Woods, or that my girls would be too young to truly understand the magical world of Pooh and his friends.

I worried for nothing.

All three sat intently for the 68 minute movie that saw Pooh on his eternal hunt for “Huny” and Eeyore trying to find his tail… or tale…. or tael…  depending on who spelled it!

The whimsical, classic tale is beautifully drawn, hysterical, and heartwarming.  And true to the classic Winnie the Pooh that I grew up with.  No over the top special effects, no seriously complicated musical numbers, and no detachment from what A. A. Milne meant for his beloved characters.

And I LOVED how the movie incorporated the words in the book into the movie.  You’ll see what I mean when you see it!

And as I sat, My 2 year old Megan, tucked under my arm, Sarah on my lap laughing and staring, and Katie curled up next to my husband, I thought, “This is my childhood rewound.  But through the eyes of my children.”

How often does that happen?

This movie is the perfect family outing for kids of ages and the movie is worth every penny!

A NEW ‘Winnie the Pooh Clip’

Just in time for its release tomorrow, here is a new Winnie the Pooh clip!

My review of the movie will be up tomorrow!  The family and I went to see it last night!

Film Synopsys

Walt Disney Animation Studios returns to the Hundred Acre Wood with “Winnie the Pooh.” Featuring the timeless charm, wit and whimsy of the original short films, this all-new movie reunites audiences with the philosophical “bear of very little brain” and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo—and last, but certainly not least, Eeyore, who has lost his tail.  “Ever have one of those days where you just can’t win, Eeyore?” asks Pooh.  Owl sends the whole gang on a wild quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit. It turns out to be a very busy day for a bear who simply set out to find some honey. Inspired by three stories from A.A. Milne’s books in Disney’s classic, hand-drawn art style, “Winnie the Pooh” hits theaters in the U.S. on July 15, 2011.
